Ghost Town in the Sky could be foreclosed on in June.

It looks like Ghost Town in the Sky could be up for foreclosure in June. According to the article below, if additional funding is not found before then, foreclosure could take place.  I would imagine this is a bad economy to be looking for funding in. This all boils down to a nearly $10 million dollar loan BB&T has with the park.  They are giving the owners of Ghost Town until June to work something out, or be foreclosed on.

The sad thing is, Ghost Town is one of the bigger tourist draws in Maggie Valley.  About 200 people work at Ghost Town in the Sky, so this will surely be bad news for those folks.

I hope, for the sake of Maggie Valley, that something can be worked out.  If I get more information on this, I’ll post it.

DAY-1 Ski Trip in Maggie Valley…

Alright, we are finally back in the Smokies! We arrived at about 4AM (extremely late arrival is a long story) this morning at A Holiday Motel (www.holidaymotel.net) in Maggie Valley.  We slept for about 6 hours before getting out of the room at around 11AM this morning.  We were skiing at Cataloochee (www.cataloochee.com ) soon thereafter.  There was a snow storm moving into the area.  That’s good news, because that means lots of great powder. The bad news is, it snowed so hard, they had to close the slopes early.  We were planning to ski until they closed at 10PM, but they had to close at 4:30PM due to the extreme snow.  The snow is not a problem at the top of the mountain, but considering you have to drive back down the mountain, the snow-covered roads are the reason they had to close early.  We were just about the last people on the mountain before we left.

Now, keep in mind, on our way UP the mountain, just a few hours earlier, there were bits of snow on the sides of the road, but just a little white here and there.  As you can see by these photos we took on the way down the mountain, the entire area now looks like a winter wonderland.

Here’s a look at some fields on the way down the mountain.

Then, another of the cabins you see along the road down the mountain.

The Cataloochee folks tell us they expect lots of additional snow throughout tonight.  They plan to open at 8:30AM tomorrow, and will stay open until 10PM.  IF that happens, we plan to be there from open to close.  We’ll post more photos from tomorrow once we get back from the slopes.

Also, I wanted to let you know when we will be airing another “LIVE IN THE SMOKIES” episode of the GoSmoky.com Internet Talk Show.  I will be hosting a show on THIS Sunday morning from Maggie Valley.  I plan to have several guests on the show, including a representative from the N.C. Department of Transportation.  He spent several days last week at the site of the rock slide on I-40.  He’ll update us on the project. That “LIVE FROM THE SMOKIES” episode of the GoSmoky.com Internet Talk Show will take place this Sunday morning at 8:30AM.  I will post the show link here on the blog.  You can listen live, or listen to the show podcast later at the link.  Stay tuned!

Quick housekeeping note… goal for 2010, and email updates

This is just a quick housekeeping note.

I always like to let people know about goals.  That way we all know if we hit them.  I told you about our hitting 25K views on the blog so far since it started (began here on wordpress last Feb.) Anyhow, I want to see us do 150% of that for 2010.  So that makes the new goal 37,500 views by the end of 2010.  See ya on Dec. 31st! If you could let your friends know about the blog, I’d appreciate it.

One more thing… I just added a feature that will automatically email you all of my latest blog posts.  Just click on the box on the right side of the front page of the blog to add yourself.  I know lots of people use RSS feeds of some sort, but I thought I’d add that just in case you want to stay on top of things without having to just click over here over and over (but feel free to visit as often as you’d like:)

***Just 2 days away, and I’ll be headed back to the Smokies.  This will be the 2nd ski trip up there with my brothers.  I’m hosting another online gosmoky.com internet talk show about the trip soon.  Stay tuned! The trip is brought to you by www.cataloochee.com (where we will ski) and www.holidaymotel.net (where we will stay.) ***

2nd Annual GoSmoky Ski Trip…

If you heard the end of my last episode of the GoSmoky.com Internet Radio Show (http://www.blogtalkradio.com/gosmoky/2010/01/12/smoky-mountain-author-j-greg-johnson-joins-us-on-t)  you may have heard me mention that I am planning another trip to the Smokies in a couple of weeks.  Well, I’m working out some details, and I thought I’d share them with you, my readers.

Last year, we did our first of what I’m planning to make annual ski trips to the Smokies on the GoSmoky.com Internet Talk Show and Blog.

This year, I plan to take many more photos, as well as some videos to post on our youtube page. (www.youtube.com/gosmoky) Right now, the only thing on the page is a short video from Laurel Falls (great way to take a 30 second “vacation:)

Due to the I-40 Rock Slide, and possible winter weather, this year we will not be able to ski in Gatlinburg and Maggie Valley.  We’ve decided to ski for 2 days at the Cataloochee Ski Area (www.cataloochee.com.)

We will also be staying in Maggie Valley at the Holiday Motel (www.holidaymotel.net.) I’m excited about our stay there.  We chose their motel because they are ranked number 1 in TripAdvisor.com’s Maggie Valley section (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotels-g49313-Maggie_Valley_North_Carolina-Hotels.html.)

We’ll be in the area from Jan. 28-31st.  I’ll get lots of photos and at least a couple of additional videos posted to the site when we get back.

I’m also planning another episode of the GoSmoky.com Internet Talk Show on the area.  I’ll post details on that once I have the show planned.

Check out snow on the live webcams…

I’ve been focused on Christmas lately, and haven’t had the chance to blog much recently.  Hopefully, the posts I’ve already collected here give you enough info to get your Smokies fix anyhow.  I just checked the stats, and just yesterday, more than 150 of you stopped by the blog.  I appreciate that.  I’ll be blogging more and more in the near future.  I also have a number of shows planned for the next month or so on the GoSmoky.com radio show.  I plan to talk to the Haywood County, North Carolina officials about how the rock slide is impacting the area.  That’s the area including Maggie Valley.  I’m also going to be scheduling another show based on a book on the Smoky Mountains.  This one will be lots of fun.  I just finished reading the book a few weeks ago, and it will be a show you’ll love.  Then, probably near the end of Jan, or early Feb, I’m planning on doing another show on skiing in the Smokies. The first shows on skiing in the Smokies that I did last year are some of the most popular episodes I’ve done.  And right now, that is a great thing to do in the Smokies.  You can check out the snow in the Smokies on our live webcams.  You can see it on most of the cams during the day, but feel free to check out the Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg cams where you can even see the snow at night.  Enjoy!

Also, I saw that Dave on his blog over at www.SmokyMountainTower.com says he still has this Christmas week available.  If you are planning a last minute Christmas trip to the Smokies, touch base with Dave, you’ll love The Smoky Mountain Tower as much as we do:) Here’s a link to his blog post… http://smokiesrentdirect.blogspot.com/2009/12/decorated-for-christmas.html

UPDATED: Snow update: Cataloochee Ski Area opens today…

UPDATE: I’ve had a guy asking me to update this page.  Cataloochee.com is where this story came from.  They had the breaking news below on their website.  Now it says they ended up NOT opening due to warm temperatures.  You can see that from the link provided below, but I wanted to update here as well so it wouldn’t be so confusing.

Check out the webcam at Cataloochee ski area in Maggie Valley.  Snow cannon is blasting the snow right now.  They plan to open for the season today.   A copy of their “breaking news” on the opening is below…

Ghost Town in the Sky in Maggie Valley files for bankruptcy

Ghost Town in the Sky

This is really sad.  The Ghost Town in the Sky amusement park was closed for about 5 years before opening up again 2 years ago.  Now it is having more financial hard times.  The closing of Ghost Town would be another huge hit to the Maggie Valley area, as the park employs a number of people in a very small community.  Let’s pray they can stay in business.  The link below has more…
